A Purchaser in the retail industry, also known as a Buyer, plays a crucial role in managing the acquisition of products or services for a retail store or chain. They also negotiate with suppliers, maintain relationships, and assess the performance of existing vendors. Key skills for a Purchaser include strong negotiation skills, excellent analytical abilities, good numerical skills, and a keen understanding of the retail industry. They should also have strong interpersonal skills to liaise with vendors and internal teams effectively. Knowledge of procurement software and methodologies is beneficial. Certifications such as Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) can boost their credibility and skills.
