Some work can be accomplished from home, some will require being at an agencylocation. Additionally, the position requires travelling up to and sometimesmore than 75% of the time, periodically being away from your duty station for upto 28 consecutive days/month. Preference will be for candidates to work40-50hrs/week consistently for 6 months- 1 year with potential to extend.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in Masonry, woodworking or other tradecrafts OR BA/BS Degree in Masonry, woodworking or other trade crafts withminimum additional experience of 5 year(s) in Masonry, woodworking or othertrade crafts

Project management; Knowledge of and ability to use common hand and powertools associated with construction and building trades work; Comprehensiveknowledge of traditional tools and materials used by craftsmen in constructionof various historic buildings and structures; Thorough knowledge of OSHAregulations/procedures and various code requirements applicable to constructionand building trades.Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, MS Outlook,MS SharePoint, Adobe AcrobatDuties:

The HPTC was established in 1977 and is one of several National Park Service(NPS) National Training Centers. In undertaking its mission, HPTC trainspreservation craftspeople, preserves historic resources, and promotes historicpreservation as the key to the future. The major programs and services providedby the HPTC are services for the treatment of NPS, Federal, and State historicproperties and extensive outreach training programs aimed at building the skillsof personnel responsible for the maintenance and preservation of historicproperties. Enrollee is responsible for planning, evaluating, initiating,establishing, administering, and managing preservation projects from inceptionthrough completion. They will help guide project formulation and developmentthrough to completion meeting project quality, budget, and schedule commitments.They will also accompany youth intern participants into the field to conducthistoric preservation facilities projects.

Research and Assessment: Researches, investigates, evaluates and recordsdata pertaining to historic structures for the purpose of determining theirphysical condition, style, and period of architecture, and degree of treatmentrequired. Conducts onsite inspections of historic structures to determine thestructure?s physical condition and the type and amount of maintenance orpreservation require to maintain or return the structure to its propercondition. Makes recommendations and decisions to clients regarding type ofpreservation treatment required. 25%Project Planning: Prepares detailed drawings and designs missing portions ofstructures to be restored. Prepares plans and specifications forrestoration/preservation projects and estimates the costs of such projects.Develops lists of materials needed for projects. Writes scope of work and costestimates for project agreements. Examines drawings and plans day laborrestoration and preservation projects from the standpoint of materials, crafts,costs, specials tools, etc 25%Project Management: Accompanies youth intern participants into the field atvarious National Park Service units, guiding and instructing historicpreservation project work. Prepares schedules for the completion of work.Reviews work and assesses the progress of the project and team. Advises HPTC andpark leadership of the status of the work. Provides advice and technicalassistance to Interns, Exhibit Specialists and Exhibit Specialist Trainees toassist in resolving preservation challenges. Trains restoration and preservationspecialists in historically appropriate techniques and use of specialtools. 50%

Other:Required Safety Gear: The enrollee is required to wear and maintain personalprotective equipment, as the work requires, including but not limited to, hardhats, safety toed boots, gloves, goggles, fall protection harness, and a varietyof respirator types. The enrollee is required to work off the ground on ladders,scaffolds and on the structural framework of buildings.Physical requirements: The physical effort required is considered heavy tomoderate. Work requires regular and continuous operation and surveillance ofshop functions and work in the field. The work requires considerable physicalexertion related to actions such as recurring lifting, pushing, pulling orcarrying of objects over 50lbs and of various sizes and shapes. The enrolleemust frequently stand while working, climb ladders, work from scaffolding orplatforms more than 30 feet above the ground, and crawl beneath buildings. Thework requires continuous physical effort and regularly requires the enrollee towork overhead or in awkward, stretched, or uncomfortable positions. He/she isrequired to perform work in all manners of environmental conditions such assnow, rain, mud, and heat. Backcountry work may require the enrollee to travelto remote job sites by foot over rough terrain. Work involves potentiallyhazardous proximity to power tools and heavy construction equipment such astrucks, cranes, tractors and earthmoving equipment. The enrollee is required towork off the ground on ladders, scaffolds and on the structural framework ofbuildings. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals withdisabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
